YA Scavenger Hunt

Welcome to YA Scavenger Hunt! This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors...and a chance to win some awesome prizes! At this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize--one lucky winner will receive one book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 72 hours!

One thousand years after a cataclysmic event leaves humanity on the brink of extinction, the survivors take refuge in continuums located in outer space, underwater, and underground. They're designed to sustain the human race until repopulation of Earth becomes possible. Against this backdrop, a group of young friends in the underwater Thirteenth Continuum dream about life outside their totalitarian existence, an idea that has been outlawed for centuries. When a shocking discovery turns the dream into a reality, they must decide if they will risk their own extinction to experience something no one has for generations—the Surface.

Today I’m sharing my dream film casting and director for my debut novel The 13th Continuum. I’m pleased to announce that my book series has already been optioned by some great producers for film. Currently, we’re looking for the perfect director to bring it life on the big screen. Before I was a writer, I worked in Hollywood at a movie studio on many films, including The Lord of the Rings films, The Golden Compass, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. So I know what a great film package looks like! I’m confidant that we’re going to find some amazing talent. So here’s my dream list!

Director—Alfonso Cuaron
(Gravity, Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

For many years, he’s been my favorite filmmaker. His visual style and storytelling abilities set him apart from almost everyone else working today. Not only did he direct my favorite Harry Potter film, but I think Children of Men is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. I walked out of the theater shaking with excitement the first time I saw it. I’d love to find someone with his visual style to translate the book to film.

Myra Jackson—a young Zoe Kravitz
(X-Men: First Class, Divergent, Mad Max: Fury Road)

About Myra: lead protagonist, 16 years old, engineering apprentice, lives in the underwater colony the Thirteenth Continuum

The leads will be played by teen actors, so I’m hoping we’ll discover new talent—the next big up-and-coming star! But for the purposes of imagining them, I picture Myra as being played by a young Zoe Kravitz. Myra is descended from African-American and Indian-American ancestors, so it’s important that we cast a diverse actress to play her. Also, we need to find someone who can communicate both Myra’s toughness and her intellectual curiosity. Someone like Zoe Kravitz would be perfect!

Captain Aero Wright—a young Tom Hardy
(Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception, The Revenent)

About Aero: lead protagonist, 16 years old, soldier in the Interstellar Army of the Second Continuum, a space colony, skilled in Falchion-to-Falchion combat

Again, we’ll need to find the next big star! But I picture Aero as being a young version of Tom Hardy. I love his toughness and vulnerability, and ability to convey both of those traits non-verbally. Aero is a soldier first and foremost. He struggles to express his emotions. In fact, having emotions is forbidden in his colony, so he has to repress them.

President Elijah Wade—Idris Elba
(The Wire, Beasts of No Nation, Pacific Rim)

About Elijah Wade: he’s the President of the United States who is evacuated to the underwater Thirteenth Continuum, he’s also the first president of the colony, his daughter Elianna Wade is the Carrier for her colony

Elianna Wade—Halle Berry
(X-Men, Cloud Atlas, Catwoman)

About Elianna: the daughter of the President of the United States who is evacuated to the underwater Thirteenth Continuum, Carrier of the Beacon, Myra’s ancestor

Padre Flavius—Paul Giamatti
(Sideways, Straight Outta Compton, 12 Years a Slave)

About Padre Flavius: antagonist in the underwater Thirteenth Continuum, leader of an evil religious contingent and the Synod, which controls their government

Major Vinick—Vin Diesel
(The Fast and the Furious, The Chronicles of Riddick)

About Vinick: antagonist in the Second Continuum (space colony), one of the six Majors and second in command behind the Supreme General

So there you have it! My dream choices for casting the film version of my book. To learn more about these characters and find out if you agree with my choices, you’ll just have to read The 13th Continuum.

And don't forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books by me, Jennifer Brody, and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 14. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the purple team and you'll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
